We claim luck because his injury could have been much more severe and devastating, and he could have received lethal injury or career ending, rather just halting and changing. After placing poorly in the Triple Crown, 11th, 10th, and 8th respectively, we were highly concerned. 11th in the Derby wasn't too surprising considering the poor outside post position and then a tumble down to his knees followed by a stumble later down the track after regaining ground up to 6th position. Following the Derby and Preakness veterinarians checked him, but he wasn't lame, and we issued no x-rays. Following the Belmont, however, x-rays were requested and shin splints were discovered. Raced once more as a 3 year old, he placed 6th in August, and was rested the entire rest of the year. After much rest, veterinarian and owner, Kaitlyn, along with a second opinion released Epidemic into an alternative career, and February of 2008 will be the debut of Epidemic's Hurdling and Steeplechasing career. With plans a go, 2008 will see the Novice Hurdles division, followed by Novice Steeplechasing in 2009. |
